Chris Jones goes Sellaband 09-10-2009

When utopia becomes reality: Within Temptation and Armin van Buuren discovered the English singer Chris Jones on the internet. Despite being a threat for the traditional business model of record companies, the internet more and more provides young artists a fantastic platform to launch their career. While it used to be an unwritten law in the music business that artists have to break out of their home territory, the opportunities to be discovered on the world wide web and to be able to finance an album without the support of a record company, are no longer utopia but reality.

The latest example is “Chris Jones”, a young singer from Liverpool. When Armin van Buuren (No 1 DJ in the world) came across some songs on the MySpace of Chris Jones, he choose his demo “Going Wrong” to be reworked as an Armin van Buuren single. As a result, Chris Jones performed the track with Armin as a guest singer in front of huge crowds.

Chris Jones’ roots are of a rock singer but nowadays, artists are much more open minded to other genres as this nurtures musical innovation. A perfect example is Sharon den Adel, lead vocalist of Within Temptation, Holland’s best selling band internationally, who also co-wrote and recorded the dancetrack “In And Out Of Love” with Armin van Buuren. The video of this song has become one of the biggest music clips on the internet in 2008 with more than 35 Million views on the youtube platform.

Robert Westerholt of Within Temptation, who was invited by Armin van Buuren to the ArminOnly concert where Sharon den Adel performed “In and Out Of Love”, had already noticed the great voice on “Going Wrong” in Armin’s studio and was introduced to Chris Jones that same evening. Robert Westerholt: “When the two of us talked about our favorite music, it became clear that we have similar ideas in respect to songwriting and we decided to meet and check out how it would be to write together”.

Chris teamed up with Robert and Swedish producer Daniel Gibson after that and together they started writing and recording demos. The unique collaboration brought together creative minds from Holland, Sweden and the UK. With the project being managed by AT Productions and Eye Sound (Holland/Germany), the experienced managementteam behind Within Temptation, this truly is an international set-up. The first few sessions were already promising and brought to light a sound and style that Chris had been looking for all this time. Chris Jones: “It was amazing, it really clicked creatively and my voice would just fit very naturally to the melodic rock tunes we had written”. As it happened, Within Temptation had a new acoustic album in production and a new song “Utopia” was chosen to be the leading single for the release. When Sharon heard more demos of Chris Jones, she knew immediately their voices would match perfectly to make “Utopia” a great duet. “Utopia” will introduce Chris Jones as a new artist. The video for “Utopia”, that features Sharon en Chris, has already earned major scores on www.youtube.com in its first week and the song is starting to rack up major airplay around Europe.

“Utopia” will be released on October 23rd as a digital single. Chris Jones: “As a new artist, I am thrilled and thankful that I got the chance to introduce myself as a duet partner of Sharon den Adel in Within Temptation’s new single “Utopia”. But a duet is not an album. Again with respect to the album, the opportunities for Chris Jones are online. Chris Jones hooked up with Sellaband, the internet platform where music fans become believers/investors in new artists and buy shares in order to raise funds for their new music projects, such as the recording of a new album.
